OJUELA BRIDGE

The Ojuela Bridge or the Mapimi Bridge is a suspension bridge located in Mapimí, in the Mexican state of Durango, at the site of the OjuelaGoldmine. The Ojuela Bridge was designed by Wilhelm Hildenbrand and built by the firm of John A. Roebling Sons Company, New York. Completed in 1898 the bridge was restored as a tourist attraction in 1991. It has a main span of 271.5 metres and the distance between the pylons is 315.5 metres. Currently this bridge is only used for pedestrians.

Ojuela is a village placed in Durango, Mexico, in between of two big hills, where an old mine and the workers home was and later on abandoned.  Its name was given because of the Spanish conquistador “Francisco de Ojuela” who found the mineral richness of the place. Gold, silver, zinc and magnesium were extracted from it during the Colonial era, which give wealth and prosperity to the villagers from Ojuela, where more than five thousand people lived.

The village had all the commodities of its time, electricity, shops, churches, schools and drinking water, but at mid XX century, the Santa Rita mine get flood,  causing the villagers to left the place because everything get destroy.

At the frontier limits of three states (Durango, Chihuahua and Coahuila) there is a natural reserve, decreed in 1979. The place have a big touristic interest, like the “Zona del silencio” (Zone of silence)   where frequent space phenomena like meteors are visible.  It exist a big electromagnetic field that make difficult the use of radio, television or mobile phones. 

This semi-arid region of the desert, counts with an incredible biological biodiversity, where more than 350 species of vegetation get developed, besides of the distinct species of fauna.  In the semi-deserted zone of Durango, historical and archeological traces, like fossils, rocks with hieroglyphics and cave painting, were found.

The story of the village started on July the 25th, the “Mineral de Santiago de mapimi” name was given to it because it was founded to support the mining. In the distance you can appreciate the mountains where this ghost town of Ojuela shines its remains and its old foundations.
